Notes
For the first time in… I don’t know exactly how many years (over 40, anyway, since I didn’t keep track), we have a race in Madrid. On a completely new circuit, “Madring”, which has a loop like a ring (turn 12). Mad-ring, mad-rid, get it? How cool are they, too bad that turn 12 was pretty much pointless.
Everywhere I read, everyone had high expectations for this circuit. By the end of Sunday, it was more boring than Monaco.
Qualifying
- the only place where we got any action, which nobody expected
- Lando Norris manages an almost perfect lap and takes pole. Until that moment, he wasn’t even a candidate for top 3, considering his Q1 and Q2 performance.
Race
- at the start there were a few overtaking attempts, but nothing spectacular
- Ferrari, in typical fashion, is left with only one driver in the race after Lewis’s brakes give out pretty quickly and he’s a snowplow in every corner on the circuit
- Lando was comfortably leading the race until we had a VSC, everyone pitted, except Lando, who missed the VSC window for a pitstop
- You’d expect that’s it, he gets the lead since it’s only lap 14 and he’ll pit later, but no. He pitted after the VSC ended, right on that lap. It was a Ferrari-style strategy moment at McLaren. that’s where Lando lost the race
- Leclerc led most of the rest of the race, but he had to make a pit stop for the mandatory tire compound change
- Antonelli wins in a race just as boring as Monaco. Maybe even more boring. At least in Monaco the qualifying is top-tier.
Madrid is on the calendar until 2035! Is it worth giving up Spa for this?!
What’s next, a Sprint session at Monaco?! (yes, there might be a Sprint session at Monaco next year)
I understand you have to milk this sport as much as possible for money, but the FIA seems more interested in the hype around the weekend with the event, rather than the spectacle and direct competition on the track.
