Notes
The one-month break is over, and we had a new race in Miami.
Yes, we’re jumping straight to round 6 now; I didn’t number it wrong.
I did everything I could to watch sprint qualifying, the sprint race, qualifying for the main race, and the race itself, even though I had just arrived or was on vacation, even though it was 11:00 PM local time, even though I was on the tram during the Sprint and watching on my phone. I really made an effort. Only to realize that the race on Sunday started at a completely different time and I missed 17 laps of it.
Because of bad weather, they moved the race earlier. That’s a good thing for us in Europe since it’s at a more reasonable hour, but a bad thing because I didn’t see the notification.
It seems that as the seasons go by, we’re going to see fewer and fewer wet races. The FIA always seems to forget that we have dedicated wet-weather tires.
A few impressions:
- McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull brought some upgrades, and that showed in qualifying and in the Sprint. Mercedes didn’t control the race as easily anymore.
- The start of the race came with accidents, the most notable one being between Gasly and Lawson. It’s worth appreciating the safety measures F1 cars have nowadays.
- Kimi Antonelli wins the race, but it wasn’t 100% because of the car; he really drove very well and had a perfect pit stop. It’s incredible how he managed to control the race after taking the lead and withstand the pressure from McLaren. You’d think the emotions might be too much and that he would make a mistake, but he saw it through to the end.
- Progress for Red Bull. They also adopted the “Macarena” design for the rear wing, like Ferrari. Verstappen would have had a better race if it weren’t for the incident at the start. Bonus points for annoying Russell a bit while Russell was struggling to overtake him.
- Charles Leclerc: total depression over there. He leads part of the race, pits when I don’t think he should have (classic), recovers to P3, then on the final lap he slides and spins in the middle of the track, hits the barrier with his wheel, and drags himself to the finish in 5th place. Then he also gets a 10-second penalty after the race 💖
- A great race for Franco Colapinto, finishing in 8th. He also met Messi in the paddock.
