Notes

Okay, so we got the best race of the season. Honestly, possibly the best one of the last two seasons.

I was so tired my eyes were closing in the final laps, but I stayed until the end to watch the post-race discussions and the podium, because it really was a race worth staying up for.

The weekend started with a lot of drama between George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. The Sprint race was very tight, with Antonelli looking like he had completely run out of patience with Russell and wanted to get past him as quickly as possible. He went off track twice trying to overtake, lost position to Lando, who moved up to P2 and stayed there until the end of the Sprint.

Antonelli’s radio sounded like a Discord server chat when someone leaves their mic open. Toto had to step in and tell him that dirty laundry should be washed in private, not over the public radio.

In qualifying after the Sprint, Russell and Antonelli went at it again. Russell started from pole.

And then the race! 😱

Antonelli stayed right on Russell’s tail for 30 laps and even managed to overtake him a few times, though never for good. On lap 30, Russell’s engine gave out, and he lost his temper too, starting to throw the seat support and whatever else he could find onto the track. That was very satisfying 😅

Antonelli took the lead and finished the race in P1, his 4th win in a row!

Even if the race had stayed like that, it still would have been great, but there was even more to it. In the second half of the race, we suddenly had Lewis Hamilton (P3) chasing Max Verstappen (P2), and he managed to close the gap enough to attack him in the final laps and overtake him for 2nd place.

Lewis was absolutely on it this weekend.

Other things worth noting:

  • McLaren put on a Ferrari-style strategy masterclass. They started on intermediates, then came into the pits a few laps later for mediums, only to pit again and switch to mediums… 🤷‍♂️ Norris retired, and Oscar finished 11th. Honestly, they would have been better off retiring both cars around lap 10, because the direction things were heading in was pretty obvious.
  • Albon hit a marmot during Sprint qualifying.
  • Franco Colapinto scored 8 points in this race, which is huge for him. And Gasly finished in the points too.
  • Charles had a pretty quiet weekend; nothing really seemed to work for him. He qualified fairly low down, and his race was okay-ish.
  • There was a huge gap between Hadjar in 5th and the rest of the field. Even with all the penalties in the world, he still ended up finishing P5.
