Formula 1 has officially entered the summer break.

The Hungarian race was the last before the break, and now we wait until August 21 for Zandvoort—Max’s home (one of his “homes”).

It looks like we’ll have Malaysia on the list this year. The Bahrain race, round 16, will be held there. Somehow I’ll go back to what I said in a previous post: why didn’t they do this earlier at the start of the calendar? They’re introducing this change in the middle of the season. Wouldn’t it have been logistically simpler to sort this out before the 2026 season started, especially since the situation in the Middle East didn’t look great?

Notes

Qualifying

  • Alonso makes it to Q2! The Aston Martin tractor somehow manages to be only 1.5 seconds slower than the rest of the competitive cars.
  • Lewis seemed set for pole, but Norris manages to take P1 on the final lap.
  • Lewis gets a 3-place grid penalty for ruining Piastri’s lap.
  • Charles starts from P2, a long run to the first corner at the start—maybe he can take P1 there with a late brake.

Race

  • The start was good, the top 5 fought for positions, and Oscar took the lead. Lewis and Max battled for P3 on the first lap.
  • Both Ferraris started on softs and failed to gain any advantage that way.
  • Lewis manages an early pit stop to undercut Verstappen, and P3 seemed secured.
  • Max exits the pit, catches up to Lewis, and overtakes Hamilton in a moment of inattention. I don’t know if it was a visibility issue because there was another car between them (Lawson) or if he simply didn’t expect Max to brake so late, but all the effort to gain the position with the early pit stop was wasted.
  • Oh, I forgot about Russell. His car didn’t start properly at the beginning, he lost 12 positions there—basically his race started from P20. 😅
  • The McLaren drivers fought for P1, with Norris complaining he’d have a better pace than Oscar if he just had clean air ahead on the track, blah blah.
  • The dispute was resolved differently: Sainz decided to turn left without looking and took Oscar out in the process.
  • Even though Sainz was about to be lapped by Oscar and had a blue flag to move aside for those actually fighting for points, he failed to do so.
  • He ruined Oscar’s race there, and then Oscar retired completely after a car issue.
  • Norris wins, Verstappen P2, Antonelli P3—even though you wouldn’t have guessed he’d finish on the podium if you’d seen the first part of the race.
  • Note that Max Verstappen, on his last soft compound stint, ran 25 laps or so at a fairly competitive pace.
